ENWIN Utilities will not turn off any customer’s water or electricity if they run late on payment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company has also committed to reconnecting services that have recently been disconnected.
“Water is essential to life,” said ENWIN Director of Customer Service Robert Spagnuolo. “We care about all our customers, and we know that running water for hand-washing is critical to slowing the spread of the COVID-19. We hope this measure helps a few individuals to thrive during this very difficult time.”
ENWIN Utilities, like many other local distribution companies throughout the province, has decided to extend the current suspension of disconnection from electricity for residential services for a period of three months. The mandated suspension had already been in place over the winter months.
“Some of our most vulnerable customers will be forced to stay home or work from home, potentially with reduced income,” said ENWIN CEO Helga Reidel. “We want them to know that we care and that we are here to work with them as they strive to protect their homes and families in this very difficult time.”
The moratorium for water charges is temporary, and customers will be required to make payments once the crisis has passed. An exact timeframe on the moratorium has not been determined.
“We know we must hold all customers equally accountable for the cost of the water they use, but we hope this period, without disconnections, can provide some measure of temporary relief to those customers who have the greatest need,” said Spagnuolo.
Customers will still receive late payment notices in the mail, but they will not have to fear that their water or electricity will be disconnected.
