The annual Bench Talk with the Downtown Mission Executive Director raised more than $5,000 over its goal.
For the past four years, Ron Dunn has picked a night in November when he sits outside the Downtown Mission, collecting donations for programs and answering any questions the public may have about homelessness, poverty, and supports in the community.
When BlackburnNews.com spoke with him around 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dunn admitted he was tired.
"I'm feeling a bit punchy," he laughed. "You know what? I'm pumped. We're about $2,200 away from our goal of $40,000, which will then be matched."
The donor has chosen to remain anonymous.
Before the fundraiser got underway on Thursday morning, Dunn said about $18,000 online.
Most of the donations are small. He said the largest overnight was from a man who used his VISA to give $5,000. However, most people offer $20, $50, or $100 bills.
"Which is how we raise all of our money, really," said Dunn. "Eighty per cent of our money comes in at less than $100. It's the $20 donor that makes all of this happen."
The money will go to programs. Demand for food, in particular, has been higher this year. Some of it will also help socially isolate clients who come to stay at the shelter for the night.
The Downtown Mission is still collecting donations for the fundraiser but as of 1 p.m. Friday it had raised $45,304.
