Prescribed burns start at Point Pelee National Park

Starting Monday, Parks Canada will begin a series of prescribed burns at Point Pelee National Park.

"Prescribed fires contribute to the restoration of Point Pelee National Park's globally rare savannah ecosystem," read a release from Parks Canada.

It says the burns improve the habitat for species at risk by clearing away invasive species, releasing nutrients, and encouraging native seed germination.

The burns will end on April 15.

Anders Field, DeLaurier, Cactus Field, Sleepy Hollow, and along the southern portion of the western Lake Erie shoreline will burn.

The park will remain open to visitors, but some areas may be closed during the prescribed burns for short periods to protect the public.

"The prescribed fires will only be initiated when the environmental and weather conditions are suitable," continued the release. "Extensive planning and careful execution will ensure that the prescribed fires are controlled and contained within predetermined boundaries."

There will be smoke, but team members will monitor wind conditions and direct it away from publicly used areas as much as possible.
