Another significant drop in local COVID-19 case rate

The COVID-19 case rate in Windsor-Essex dropped significantly again this week.

The case rate per 100,000 residents now sits at 30.1 while last week the rate was 46.8. The positivity rate among those tested also decreased this week and sits at 4 per cent.

On Friday, the health unit reported 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the community. Among the new cases, eight are close contacts of previously confirmed infections, seven are community-acquired and one case is still under investigation.

There are 162 active cases and 92 of them involve a variant of concern.

To date, 72.2 per cent of adults in the community have been partially vaccinated and 10.5 per cent have received both doses. On average, there are around 4,000 doses of vaccines administered daily in the community.

Starting Saturday at 8 a.m., any resident who received the first dose of a vaccine on or before March 31 and residents 70 and older will be eligible to book an appointment to receive their second dose.

This varies slightly from the provincial booking system which will allow all residents who received a vaccine before April 18 to book a second dose appointment starting on Monday.

All residents who received AstraZeneca and have decided to get a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for their second dose can also book an appointment through the online portal starting on Monday. Only those who received their first dose more than 12 weeks prior should book an appointment. Pharmacies continue to receive limited shipments of AstraZeneca vaccine doses for those who want it as their second dose.
