Once again, residents in Windsor-Essex will be asked to put a non-perishable food donation on their front step this Sunday, June 27.
Organizers of the June 27th Miracle are planning another event this month.
The donation drive was such a big success last year that it collected more than 2-million pounds of food. Over 28,000 families and 120 organizations benefitted. The pantry finally ran dry last month, so organizers hope to refill their supplies.
Committee member Matt Hernandez told BlackburnNews.com the need has not disappeared.
"Hunger is something that is very primal and something we believe is a human right," he said. "We know there's a lot of children, families that have been impacted greatly because of this pandemic and other factors."
He said organizers learned a lot from last year's effort, so there will be one major change for organizations that need food.
"We are asking organizations in the community that want to receive the food to register via our website," explained Hermandez. "That way, we can work with them to ensure that this goes directly to the people who need it."
The donation drive also needs volunteers.
Last year, organizers managed to pull together the event in just three weeks and were pleasantly surprised when 10,000 volunteers came out to help.
"This year, we have about three weeks and two days to prepare, so we feel we're very well ahead of the game this year," joked Hernandez, saying those who want to help out can visit the event's website, go to its Facebook page, Instagram page or on Twitter. "The handles for all of those are exactly the same, @June27Miracle."
Volunteers are needed for both collection and sorting.
COVID-19 protocols will be strictly followed.
