Health unit recommends working remotely when possible

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in the region, the public health unit is urging people to limit interactions when possible.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said that should include allowing employees to work from home when possible and holding meetings virtually.

On Monday, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 187 new cases over the previous three days. There are now 518 active cases in the community.

Dr. Nesathurai indicated these are similar levels to last year's holiday season and would have put the region into partial lockdown if the province were still using its coloured scale.

Despite the burden of disease in the region, Dr. Nesathurai said the goal is to keep kids in school.

"To achieve that we have to reduce the number of cases in the community because the more cases in the community, the more likely there are to be people exposing children in classes and the more exposures there are in classes the more classes are dismissed," said Dr. Nesathurai .

There are currently outbreaks at nine schools, 19 workplaces, seven community facilities, and two long-term care and retirement homes.

Local hospitals are treating 23 people who have tested positive for COVID-19.
