What's open and closed New Year's weekend in Windsor-Essex?

As 2021 comes to a close and 2022 is welcomed in Windsor-Essex, many businesses are pausing to commemorate the arrival of the New Year.

All municipal offices in Windsor-Essex are closed for at least a portion of New Year's weekend, with some treating Friday, New Year's Eve, as the statutory holiday, and others holding it on Monday, January 3, 2022. Check with your municipality to get the correct schedule for where you live.

There will be no Canada Post delivery Monday. All Service Ontario branches are closed, while some transactions can be performed online.

Many big-box stores and restaurants will be closed or on abbreviated hours, with the Ontario government limiting capacity at most public places at 50 per cent. Retailers are also subject to regulations and may have their own masking policies. Call ahead to avoid a wasted trip.

Devonshire Mall, Tecumseh Mall, and Windsor Crossing are all open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and closed Saturday.

All Beer Store locations will close at 6 p.m. New Year's Eve and remain closed New Year's Day. All LCBO outlets are open Friday with some locations under extended hours, and closed Saturday.

All four public school boards in Windsor-Essex are scheduled to reopen to in-person learning on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

The University of Windsor's winter semester begins January 17 with most programs beginning the term online. Staff is asked to report remotely on Wednesday, January 5. At St. Clair College, programs begin online instruction on January 17, with in-person classes and labs beginning January 24.

Windsor Public Library branches are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and closed Saturday. The Essex County Library is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with regular hours resuming Monday.

The city of Windsor's 311 call centre will be open Friday but closed through Tuesday, January 4. The 211 call centre will be open 24 hours as usual.

Residential and commercial garbage collection will take place as usual. The public drop-off and household chemical waste depot at E.C. Row and Central Ave will be closed New Year’s Day.

All Windsor community centres and customer care branches are closed until further notice due to reduced COVID-19 service protocols, except for previously-scheduled holiday programming and scheduled rentals. The city's Homelessness and Housing Help Hub (H-4) at Windsor Water World will be open each day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Forest Glade and Adie Knox Herman arenas will have limited availability on Friday and will be closed Saturday. The WFCU Centre's community rinks and bowl, and the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex arena will be closed on Friday at 2 p.m. and all day Saturday.

Adventure Bay Family Water Park remains closed indefinitely.

There will be no parking enforcement in Windsor on New Year's Day, and all metered parking will be free. Garages and service lots will be paid as normal. Parking enforcement payment offices will be open Friday, and remain closed until Tuesday, January 4.

The Chimczuk Museum and Francois Baby House are both open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and closed Saturday. Regular hours resume for the museum on Sunday, and the house on Tuesday.

Transit Windsor will operate on a modified Sunday schedule on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Check their website for more information. The downtown transit terminal will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The tunnel bus service to Detroit is suspended until further notice.
