Two Windsor doctors have come forward to set up a research and education fund at Windsor Regional Hospital.
Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Dr. Barry Emara donated $250,000 to kick start the fund.
"One of the problems with research is that it takes a lot to get it started. Well-established research programs across the country have been in existence for many years, decades oftentimes, and they generate revenue from the research that they do and they can build on that to create other research projects," said Chief of Staff Dr. Wassim Saad.
"To have such a generous donation such as this, to get it kick-started is huge. This basically catapults us at least six to 12 months if not more, in terms of research activity to build that foundation and base in order to attract more research opportunities and get the ball rolling," said Dr. Saad
He said establishing the hospital has a research facility will help to attract the best physicians to the region.
"It is critically important in recruiting new physicians. I can tell you that's one of the number one questions I get when somebody is considering coming to Windsor. What can I do for research and can I continue the research that I was doing," said Saad.
He said attracting the best physicians will improve patient care and patient outcomes.
