City offers cooling options as temperatures rise

On the hottest day of the year so far, the City of Windsor is opening Sandpoint Beach.

Lifeguards will be on duty from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Labour Day.

Lifejackets are available, along with beach matting and floating beach wheelchairs. The accessible washroom is also open.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reports all beaches across the region are open for swimming, although it has posted a warning at Mettawas Beach in Kingsville about high E.coli counts.

If you're not a swimmer, the city has opened splash pads across the city. Visitors are welcome from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, weather permitting.

Programming at outdoor municipal pools begins in July.

For those who want to stay cool without getting wet, the city has several cooling stations open to help beat the heat. Community centres and public libraries are open along with the Homelessness and Housing Hub at the former Windsor Water World.

Environment Canada has issued both a heat warning and a special air quality advisory for Wednesday. With the humidex, it will feel like 45 C. Residents should drink lots of water and check on neighbours, friends, and families who may be susceptible to heat-related illness.
