A focused effort to reduce crime in Windsor's downtown core has resulted in suspects being charged with various offences.
Windsor police's Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) Unit teamed up with the City Centre Patrol (CCP) Unit for a community-focused patrol blitz Thursday night. The POP Unit was assigned to the downtown area to help address growing concerns of violence in the neighbourhood.
During the patrol, which took place on or near Glengarry Avenue, a total of eight people were arrested. Seven were taken to the police lockup, and the eighth was released with a summons to appear in court.
The charges the suspects were brought in on included multiple arrest warrants, failure to comply with a release order, criminal mischief under $5,000, and failure to comply with probation. Eight tickets were also issued, and a suspended driver was removed from the road.
Acting Deputy Police Chief Jason Crowley said public safety for all who visit the neighbourhood motivates the patrols.
"These arrests illustrate the POP Unit’s continued efforts to enforce the law and keep our downtown community safe for residents, visitors and businesses," said Crowley.
The patrols will continue downtown for at least Friday night, just as the start of fall classes at the University of Windsor and St. Clair College will mean more young people in the core.
