Lakeshore looks to regulate large-scale greenhouses

Knowing it can't stop greenhouses altogether, Lakeshore's municipal council will attempt to lessen the impact on the community.

Councillors agreed to regulate large-scale greenhouse developments during Tuesday night's meeting.

They asked the administration for a report on removing large-scale greenhouses as a permitted use in Lakeshore's zoning bylaw. Instead, those developments would have to undergo site-specific zoning amendments. Site plan agreements would ensure they meet design and appearance standards set by councillors.

The decision comes after extensive community consultation starting in 2019 and a study considering impacts like lighting, noise, and community planning.

"We understand this is an incredibly important issue for community members, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to provide feedback and share their concerns throughout the study period," said Mayor Tracey Bailey. "This approach will give us the tools to limit the negative impact of these developments while ensuring they contribute to Lakeshore's long-term sustainability."

The public will get another chance to consult with councillors when the report from administrators comes back early next year.

Lakeshore's council will also send Lisa Thompson, the Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, a letter outlining its concerns about large-scale greenhouse developments.
