Downtown Mission to again take it to the street

The issues surrounding Windsor's vulnerable population will be brought to the streets starting Thursday morning.

The Downtown Mission is holding its annual 24-hour "bench chat" outside its Ouellette Avenue location. It will double as a fundraiser and a chance for people to have conversations about the issues facing downtown, such as homelessness and addiction.

The Mission's Executive Director, Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin, will lead the effort by spending the entire time outside, sleeping in a tent, and speaking to passersby and well-wishers.

The tradition began several years ago with the previous executive director, the Reverend Ron Dunn. The "bench chat" has attracted in the past municipal leaders, first responders, community partners, and members of the media.

This time, the "bench chat" will have a team approach. Ponniah-Goulin will be joined by, among others, Windsor Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.

Agostino, whose ward includes downtown, told WindsorNewsToday.ca that he was thrilled to have been asked to participate since he lives nearby and already gives the Mission much of his time.

"Rukshini reached out to me, and I know that's been happening every year," said Agostino. "I spend a lot of time at the Downtown Mission, so I was more than happy to accept the offer."

Agostino said the marathon event will put a spotlight on the efforts made by the Mission every day.

"The Mission has the hardest job in the city," said Agostino. "Sometimes, people don't see that, and they try really hard to help people and help downtown as much as they can. I think that the more we help them, the better it is for downtown Windsor."

All funds raised during the "bench chat" will support the Mission's programs and services.

The event begins at 11 a.m. Thursday and runs continuously until 11 a.m. Friday. Everyone is welcome to stop by.
