If you're curious about how construction is going on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, there's a new observation area you can safely watch.
The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority, Bridging North America, and the City of Windsor unveiled the observation area on the highest hill in Malden Park on Thursday morning.
Heather Grondin, the Chief Relations Officer for the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority, said the community asked for it.
"What we heard repeatedly was that people really did want a safe place to be able to, not just watch construction, but watch the ongoing operations," said Grondin. "Think of the bridge in San Francisco. There's a number of viewing areas."
The bridge authority's $20-million fund earmarked for community improvements covered the costs.
"We did consult with the community on accessibility to ensure the platform itself would be accessible," Grondin said. "It has binoculars, benches, signage, a number of features that will really make it attractive."
The area is permanent, and Grondin said it could become a tourist attraction even after construction.
Meanwhile, progress on the bridge is moving at a fast pace. The tower on the U.S. side of the Detroit River has reached its full 220-metre height, with the tower on the Canadian side not far behind. The bridge deck is half complete.
