Spitfires fire Jerrod Smith after poor start

Twenty-one games into the regular season, the Windsor Spitfires have announced it is time for a change.

The OHL club announced Monday evening that it had fired head coach Jerrod Smith. The longtime assistant with the Spits was promoted to bench boss before this season after Marc Savard left to take an assistant's job with the NHL's Calgary Flames.

"He has been a committed coach and advocate for the Spitfires for many years," read a statement from the Spitfires. "His support and dedication have been exemplary. We thank Jerrod for his effort and commitment and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

It was not immediately announced who would step in as head coach. The team's next game is Thursday night at Peterborough.

Windsor is currently in last place in the OHL's West Division, with nine points and a 4-16-1 record. That is the worst record in the league. As a whole, the Spitfires have had 125 goals scored against them.
