With as much as five centimetres of snow expected on Tuesday, and more as the week progresses, the City of Windsor is preparing.
A special weather statement from Environment Canada calls for snow and then as much as 30 millimetres of rain on Tuesday creating messy driving conditions.
Starting early Wednesday, Environment Canada forecasts up to 20 centimetres of snow and temperatures around freezing.
Plowing city streets starts once there's five centimetres of snow on the ground, and main arteries are prioritized.
"An average route takes from three to six hours to complete once the snow stops falling," said a statement from the city. "Once the main roads are clear, and only if more than 10 centimetres of snow has fallen, trucks will move into residential areas."
The city urges drivers to be patient when travelling behind a snow plow and give operators a lot of room. Typically, plows move at 40 km/h, and following too close can impede visibility. Vehicles may also be hit by thrown snow, salt or rocks.
Property owners are reminded its their responsibility to make sure sidewalks are clear. Shoveling snow back onto roadways is prohibited. Residential sidewalks need to be cleared within 12 hours, while business property owners have four hours.
The city also reminds residents it's still looking for volunteer snow angels to clear snow for those who are elderly or have mobility issues.
