City and feds still discussing Housing Accelerator application

Discussions surrounding the City of Windsor's application to access up to $40 million through the federal government's Housing Accelerator Fund are still underway.

There appeared to be some movement on the issue last week when Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens scheduled a media briefing but the briefing was cancelled due to ongoing discussions.

Speaking to the media after Monday's city council meeting, Dilkens said there appears to be a willingness to find a pathway to access the funds but the federal government is still insisting on the condition that four-plex units be allowed on all residential properties.

"When we've put forward a plan that actually has us well exceeding the targets in the application, why is that not good enough? Why can't we move forward with that and be funded appropriately? If the goal is to build more funding let us and help us build more funding," said Dilkens.

The application identifies 1,000 acres of land along transit routes and in other areas of the city where four-plex units would be allowed as of right. Dilkens says if four-plexes are built on all of these properties the city would beat the targets set by five times.
