With the City of Windsor still on the hook for $900,000 of expenses incurred from the freedom convoy, councillors are looking at ways to upload the costs of managing Huron Church Road.
In December 2022, the federal government agreed to pay $6.9 million to cover all of those costs but sent a cheque for only $6,094,915 a year later.
"It's patently unfair, it makes no sense to any of us here and we're going to keep sabre-rattling and beating the drum until we get a positive resolution to this issue," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac requested a report from administration to review options for uploading future costs to the provincial or federal governments.
"I am asking what is available to the municipality in terms of that section of road where this very, very critical piece of infrastructure has got to be kept open and the roads maintained," said Gignac.
Dilkens said Huron Church should be a part of the provincial road infrastructure.
"You have a provincial highway that leads to the new Gordie Howe Bridge you should have a provincial highway that leads to the foot of the Ambassador Bridge," said Dilkens. "You see situations like the freedom convoy which put a spotlight on this situation again and should make people look very seriously at what's going to happen down the road."
