Council hears from public on 2024 budget

Windsor City Councillors will hear from the public on Monday about the city's spending plan for 2024.

Eighteen delegates will speak in council chambers either over Zoom or in-person. Among Monday's speakers are officials from the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority, Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, and CUPE Local 543, representing the city's inside workers.

Mayor Drew Dilkens introduced the budget earlier this month and hopes to have it approved by February 6.

So far, the budget calls for another 3.93 per cent in the municipal levy, below the rate of inflation and last year's 4.48 per cent increase.

"The increase is among the lowest in Ontario and the lowest in Essex County," said Dilkens on January 8.

It's the first Windsor budget introduced with Strong Mayor powers, giving the mayor veto powers over any changes proposed by city councillors.

Councillors are expected to address the budget at their next meeting on January 29.
