Inquest to probe Windsor's man's death during police standoff

An inquest starts this month into the death of a Windsor man who died during a standoff with police six and a half years ago.

Chad Romanick died on September 15, 2017, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the garage of a home on Betts Avenue.

Police, investigating a shooting the night before in Amherstburg, surrounded the 34-year-old's home that morning. Officers tried to communicate with Romanick by calling his cell phone and using a megaphone.

That afternoon, with the house surrounded by police, officers heard a gunshot coming from the garage. With the help of equipment from Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, they pried open the garage door and found Romanick dead inside.

The Special Investigations Unit cleared Windsor Police of any wrongdoing, saying it was obvious Romanick had taken his own life.

The inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The probe will start on March 25 and hear from 12 witnesses over eight days. Selwyn Pieters will preside over the online inquest, and Roger Shallow is the inquest counsel.

It will examine the circumstances surrounding Romanick's death, and the jury will make recommendations to prevent future deaths.
