Much to the dismay of those in the public gallery, public school board trustees won't reconsider the name of Kingsville's new kindergarten to grade 12 school.
The name Erie Migration Academy has sparked protests, letters from Essex MPP Anthony Leardi, and even concerns it will leave students open to humiliation.
A motion to reconsider the name at Tuesday night's Greater Essex County District School Board meeting failed.
Six delegates urged trustees to go back to the drawing board by restriking the naming committee, some of them future students at the school.
Student Kinsey Kendrick told trustees she was mortified when she learned of the name, while another, Alexis Tindale said the acronym, E-M-A, could stand for "Eat My A - -."
Former Kingsville District High School student Angelina Ward introduced a petition with over 2,000 signatures calling on trustees to reconsider. She's also raised over $1,000 to keep the petition going.
"I urge you to reconsider this name," she said. "In the interest of true inclusiveness, give the community back its voice."
Kingsville Deputy Mayor Kim DeYong reminded trustees of the history behind the name "Kingsville" and its namesake, James King, who was the town's first schoolmaster.
"Every smaller community has a public school that bears its name, and Kingsville is worth of that too," she said.
While trustees rejected the calls to reconsider the name, they did vote in favour of sending the school naming policy back to the policy committee.
