Windsor speller to return to Washington

A champion speller from Windsor has another chance to take the big prize in Washington, D.C.

Twelve-year-old Isaac Brogan, a student at Maranatha Christian Academy, went 15 rounds Sunday to take the WFCU Credit Union Scripps Regional Spelling Bee for the second year in a row. Isaac thus stamps his ticket to the Scripps National Spelling Bee this June just outside the U.S. capital.

The grade-six student defended his title against 25 other spellers from Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, and Sarnia-Lambton at the regional competition, held at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts. Journalist Craig Pearson served as the pronouncer.

The winning word was "netiquette".

"Providing youth with opportunities for growth and development is an important part of our mission and our commitment to the communities we operate in," said WFCU Credit Union President and CEO Eddie Francis. "Congratulations to Isaac and his family for another win. We will be cheering you on this June."

Isaac has won a $200 scholarship on behalf of WFCU Credit Union, and a six-night stay in Washington with airfare and hotel paid for. He also receives a one-year subscription to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online, a one-year subscription to the Britannica Online Premium, and the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award.

He also receives a one-year subscription to Epic Family, with unlimited access to over 40,000 kids’ books, videos, and audiobooks; and a package for Tynker Coding Classes.

The runner-up was Kavya Vasudeva, a grade-six student from Christ the King French Immersion Catholic Elementary School in Windsor.
