A vacant home tax is now in effect in the City of Windsor in an effort to boost the city's housing supply.
The tax will apply to any residential properties that have been unoccupied for more than 183 days in a calendar year, with a few exceptions.
"If you suspect a property is vacant and meets the criteria simply call 311 and that will initiate a process on the city's side," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. "This is all part of housing solutions made for Windsor, we are committed to getting more homes into the market and helping deal with this housing supply challenge that we see"
A tax of 3 per cent of the property's assessment value will be added to the following year's tax bill. Exemptions will be made if the homeowner is actively trying to sell the home, if renovations are underway or if the homeowner passes away and the family is still settling the estate.
Any revenue generated from the tax will be invested in the city's housing initiatives.
