Health unit issues extended heat warning until further notice

Following a warning of dangerous heat by Environment Canada, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued its own extended heat warning.

The local warning is in effect until further notice.

Temperatures across Windsor-Essex will soar into the mid-30s this week, but with the humidity, it will feel like it's in the low 40s Celcius.

The health unit issues an extended heat warning whenever there are three or more consecutive days where day-time highs reach at least 31 C, night-time lows are 21 C or higher, or the humidex is 42 C.

On Monday, Environment Canada anticipated a day-time high of 34 with a humidex of 42 C with a low overnight of 23 C.

The region does not anticipate relief until Sunday when the forecasted high is 29 C.

The health unit warns everyone is at risk from extreme heat, especially older adults, infants, young children, pregnant women, those with chronic medical conditions, and those who work or exercise outside.

Warning signs include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness, and confusion. Anyone who experiences those symptoms should seek medical treatment.

The health unit recommends staying out of the heat, drinking plenty of water, wearing loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
