UPDATE: Emergency crews called to fire and explosions in Merlin

One person was airlifted to a hospital after a fire and some explosions at a garage in Merlin.

Officials said that the seriously injured man was taken to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and transferred to a burn unit.

Chatham-Kent police sent out a notice to the public just after 8:30 a.m. Monday, noting that emergency crews were at the scene at Merlin Road and William Street.

CK Fire and Rescue (CKFR) confirmed that multiple crews from Merlin, Raleigh South, Blenheim, and Tilbury were all called to a garage on William Street just before 8 a.m.

CKFR and the Office of Fire Marshal are currently investigating the cause and extent of the damage.

The area has since been reopened to traffic, but police and fire officials have asked people to avoid it if possible.
