Unifor donates bikes to local students

Over 75 lucky kids at W.J. Langlois are celebrating the end of the school year with a new bike.

Unifor Local 444 collected the bikes from the community and restored them to give out to kids at a local school.

"We're going to have a lot of fun riding with our bikes and going places," said Raymond Bukombe, Grade 8 student. "I'm really happy and excited for this summer."

Unifor has been collecting and restoring bikes for local schools for 21 years.

"It's always an exciting day. It actually makes everything worth it when you see the smiles on the kids faces. It's amazing," said Sue Najem, Chair of the Community Services Committee of Unifor Local 444.

The Brain Injury Association donated helmets for all of the children receiving bikes and completed a bike safety presentation.

"We really try to promote, at our school, healthy mind, body and soul, and all year we've been talking about mental health and the need to exercise," said Tom Adams, Grade 8 teacher at the school. "This continues the conversation about being a healthy school and promoting [daily physical activity]. We thank Unifor for their generosity because it's going to make the difference in the lives of many kids."
