Health unit signs off on ONA contract

There will be labour peace among Windsor-Essex's health unit nurses for the next three years.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) announced on Friday that it had approved a new three-year contract with its nurses, represented by the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) Local 8.

"We are delighted that we have reached a fair and responsible collective agreement with our public health nurses, that will allow us to continue to provide essential public health programs to meet the needs of our community," said WECHU CEO Dr. Ken Blanchette. "I want to thank our public health nurses for their incredible dedication, and I look forward to working together to deliver on our shared priorities."

Terms of the deal were not readily available, but ONA Region 5 Vice-President Alan Warrington told WindsorNewsToday.ca earlier this month that wages and work-life balance were key sticking points.

"The agreement strikes a balance between the growing demand for public health services and the budgetary pressures of the health unit, while offering nurses a meaningful wage increase in each year of the contract," read a release from the health unit.

The 75 health unit nurses represented by ONA approved the contract last week.
