Former Republican President Donald Trump continues to lead the race to 270 electoral votes, but it's still too early to call the election in his favour. He currently has 105 electoral votes to Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris's 27.

Harris is leading in Pennsylvania, considered one of the seven states that could decide the election. She's leading by 53 per cent of the vote so far among women.

Democrat Elissa Slotkin is leading in the race to replace Debbie Stabenow in the U.S. Senate for Michigan.

Democrats are leading in 83 seats for the House of Representatives to the Republican's 112 seats.

8:00 p.m. - Polls close in Michigan

Except for four counties in the Upper Peninsula, polls are closed in Michigan and 25 other states.

Michigan voters are electing not just the next President but 13 seats in the House of Representatives, all 110 seats in the Michigan House of Representatives, and one seat in the Senate.

Democrat Debbie Stabenow is retiring, and running for her seat are Democrat Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers. Stabenow was first elected in 2001 and has held the seat since.

Who controls the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate will have a huge impact on the extent to which the next President can enact their agenda.

Michigan is one of seven swing states expected to decide the election for either Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris or former Republican President Donald Trump. The other six are Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Together, those states represent 71 electoral votes.

To win, Harris or Trump need 270 electoral votes.

In Michigan, voters had nine days to cast their ballots. According to ABC News WXYZ Detroit, 3.3-million voters cast their vote early and voter turnout is set to break a record, up 45.7 per cent.

Election workers have been counting them throughout the process, some at the Huntington Centre in downtown Detroit. This time around, security is improved to protect those workers. Bulletproof glass has been installed, and workers are carrying panic buttons if they feel threatened or see something suspicious.
