Students at St. James Catholic Elementary Middle School and General Brock Elementary School are given a free lunch once a week thanks to the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan.
The United Way received a $180,000 grant to deliver the program for the first eight months of the school year.
"It's so important to see the impact of the community benefits plan and to see day-to-day how that is changing people's lives," said Heather Grondin Chief Relations Officer with the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority.
The meals are all packaged locally with local ingredients when possible.
"School lunch programs are common across the world and in many communities but for a variety of reasons they haven't taken root here in Windsor. We're super excited to be here to celebrate this initiative," said Stephanie Segave-Tiessen, manager with United Way.
Both cold and hot lunches are provided depending on the day.
"It's a blessing to have access to these delicious meals, from fresh chicken wraps to warm mac and cheese the variety is incredible. It really makes our Wednesdays something to look forward to," said Grade 8 student Sataish Hakimi.
