Point Pelee National Park expected to reopen Saturday

Parks Canada and the Caldwell First Nation have wrapped up the first week of their deer cull in Point Pelee National Park.

It'll reopen Saturday at 7 a.m.

The cull is only part of the program that started on November 1, shutting down the park to visitors. It also entailed ecosystem monitoring, counting the deer population, and protecting at-risk species.

The Hyperabundant Deer Management Program is also an opportunity for the Caldwell First Nation to mentor youth and strengthen its traditional connection to the land.

A second deer cull is January 24 to January 31.

Parks Canada said last month the white-tailed deer population was double what the forest and savannah ecosystems could tolerate.
