Cucumbers recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Cucumbers sold in Ontario are being recalled by an American company due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Sunfed Produce is recalling whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in either bulk cardboard containers with a "SunFed" label or black plastic crates with a sticker reading "Agrotato, S.A. de C.V."

A news release from the company said that the vegetables were sold across Canada and the United States between October 12 and November 26.

Sunfed Produce also said that the recall was initiated after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified them of a number of illnesses that were linked to the cucumbers. Those salmonella cases reportedly occurred between October 12 and November 15.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. These symptoms can start six hours to six days after infection and usually last four to seven days.

Anyone who may have purchased the affected products is advised to throw them away and sanitize any surfaces that could have come into contact with them to reduce cross-contamination.

Those who aren't sure if they've purchased contaminated cucumbers are urged to contact their retailer.
