Fundraiser set for family of man killed in 2022 workplace accident

A family still mourning the passing of a man killed in a workplace incident almost three years ago is now the subject of a fundraiser.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Darrell Mills.

Mills died on March 28, 2022, while working at Saturn Tool and Die in Tecumseh.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Mills was fixing a stamping press at the Oldcastle facility when it was inadvertently turned on by another employee. Mills was trapped and killed in the machinery.

The company was fined $180,000, but according to Marnie Moody, the fundraiser's organizer, Darrell's family won't see a nickel of it.

"This money goes to community services and a government fund for victims of crime," wrote Moody. "The Tremblay Mills family receives none of it. They also cannot sue the company as it became a WSIB claim."

Moody added that the money given to Darrell's wife, Michelle, was merely a pittance.

"Michelle did receive a small compensation from WSIB but nowhere near enough to make up for the loss of her husband, his wages, and his benefits," wrote Moody. "As a home daycare provider, she is struggling to make ends meet and needs help to fix several things in her home, which is an older home and has need of repairs."

The GoFundMe page has a $20,000 goal.
