The Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority is on track to start collecting green waste this fall.
It will launch an education campaign to help residents embrace the new system.
The green bins, a kitchen collection bin, and educational information will be distributed to 120,000 households starting in July.
Starting the week of October 21, green waste will be collected in the municipalities of Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Windsor. Collection in Amherstburg, Kingsville, and Leamington will start in 2026.
"It's just another bin," said Michelle Bishop, general manager at EWSWA. "It's easy. It's not hard, just like we separate our recyclables. We're going to give you the tools, and the tips, and the tricks, and the resources, and the information so that when you get your bin and your kitchen catcher, you're going to know how to use it."
With proper use, over 48 per cent of regular household garbage can be diverted from the landfill with the new program.
"Currently, food and organic waste is comingled in your traditional garbage collection. Now it will be separated, and it will be diverted from the landfill, and it will be processed at Seacliff Energy into renewable energy," said Bishop.
Collection schedules with specific dates for each neighbourhood will go out to residents.
