Restructuring at the University of Windsor will lead to a number of job losses.
A letter from President Robert Gordon written to faculty and staff notes a $30 million budget shortfall for the changes.
The changes will affect a total of 56 CUPE 1393 positions, particularly in the IT/AV support and communications departments. According to the university, 29 new roles have been created, for a net reduction of 27 positions.
Employees began receiving notices this week. All associated layoffs and bumping processes will begin immediately.
"I know this is difficult news to hear. Change is never easy, especially when it has an impact on colleagues and how we work together. We are committed to doing everything we can to support people through this transition.
To minimize the number of unionized positions affected, we have first eliminated all identified vacant positions. We also negotiated offering voluntary early retirement and voluntary severance packages to eligible unionized employees," said Gordon in his letter.
Other cost-saving initiatives are underway including changes to mail delivery, janitorial and other service areas.
