The City of Windsor is looking to develop a "Buy Canada" procurement policy for the municipality.
Councillor Kieran McKenzie passed a notice of motion at council this week to instruct administration to evaluate trade agreements and current procurement policies.
In the face of tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump, McKenzie indicates there are steps he'd like to see the municipality take.
"We recognize that these challenges are going to affect us and we want to do things that can help to mitigate what might impact not only the governance of the community but also our residents," said McKenzie.
Trump reaffirmed his plan to introduce tariffs on Canadian goods as of March 4.
McKenzie said this will have impacts on current trade agreements and the city should adjust accordingly.
"Looking at the policies that are in place that are affected by current bilateral trade agreements, if those trade agreements suddenly become, I'm not necessarily going to use the term null and void but are altered signigicantly , that creates a new landscape for us to consider where and how we purchase goods and services," said McKenzie.
The motion will be tabled at the next council meeting.
