Canadian pride and respect on display at local protest

Canadians and Americans who love Canada came together at a protest on Saturday in a binational display of pride in Canadian values and sovereignty.

On the Canadian side, hundreds gathered at the foot of Ouellette Avenue in Windsor beneath the giant Canadian flag to push back against threats to Canadian sovereignty amid a trade war that promises to decimate the economy.

On the other side of the Detroit River, hundreds more met in Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit.

Gerardo Yglesias, an American, came to the Canadian protest because he has friends in Canada.

"We have someone in office who shouldn't be in office," he told WindsorNewsToday.ca. "He's a convicted felon, a draft dodger. Even some of our veterans voted for him, and they're seeing they voted the wrong way."

Mike Brushgold of the Windsor Chapter of Democrats Abroad doesn't think the U.S. will annex Canada.

"It's not advantageous for the current administration, and I think it's more of a bravado thing for the president to say, I'm going to do this, and I'm going to do this when he's really not accomplishing very much."

It's the disrespect to Canadians that brought Linda Dupuis out.

"I live in Windsor, and my husband and I support everybody, but not people who take your freedom away," she said.

"I'm just tired of it all," said Lisa Vandelinder, who attended the protest with friends. "I'm tired of all of this nonsense and all of the lies and the disrespect for our country."

Windsor West MP Brian Masse, back from a trip to Washington where he met with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, urged Canadians to stay strong and "keep that decency and respect because that's what Mr. Trump is miscalculating."

"We are on the front line and let's show the rest of the country the front line is going to stay firm," he told the cheering crowd.
