Sentencing delayed for driver in fatal CK crash

The sentencing hearing for a Windsor man found guilty of a 2022 fatal crash near Chatham heard some very powerful and sad victim impact statements on Wednesday.

Brett Iler, 30, was found guilty of careless driving causing death and careless driving causing bodily harm on November 29, 2024.

Victim impact statements were delivered from family members of Nigel Sedge and Jaimee Doyle, who died in the crash on May 27, 2022 at Queen's Line and Dillon Road.

Nigel's mother, Sandra Sedge, told the court that her family's life has been turned upside down since the crash, adding that she misses her son every day.

Mrs. Sedge feels her son's life was stolen and fears that Iler won't fully pay for what he's done.

Jaimee's husband, Kyle Doyle, said he has to come home to an empty house and misses his wife's laugh. The court also heard they were married just seven months and wanted to start a family, but were robbed of that opportunity. He told the court his wife was perfect and he can't enjoy life without her and their planned children, adding that he still can't sleep in their bed and never got a chance to say a proper goodbye.

Other family members and friends also gave victim impact statements, including Jaimee's mother, who said she also died that night alongside her daughter. She said Jaimee touched many lives and the heartbreak is unbearable.

Nigel's aunt said her nephew was like a son, adding that he was an integral piece of the family puzzle.

The crash also severely injured Colin Chinnick, Brian Griffith, and Jaimee's husband Kyle. They all suffered broken bones and other injuries.

Iler's sentencing was to take place on Wednesday, but Justice Kelly Jackson said she needed more time to review several documents that she just received the previous day.

Iler's sentence will now be handed down on April 23, 2025.

The prosecution is recommending 10-12 months of jail and a five-year driving prohibition. The defence is pushing for a fine of $5,000 to $7,000, a four-year driving ban, two years probation, and 200-300 hours of community service, adding that sending Iler to jail won't serve anybody.

Iler apologized to the victims' family and friends, saying he is deeply sorry and that he would trade places with the deceased if he could.
