It's something disability advocates have asked for and that they'll receive, exempting the Canada Disability Benefit as income.
The Ontario government plans to exempt the federal benefit so those collecting social assistance will not see a reduction in their provincial assistance payments or entitlements.
"In a time of unprecedented economic uncertainty brought on by U.S. tariffs and trade barriers, our government is taking action to keep costs down and protect Ontario families," said Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Michael Parsa. "This starts with safeguarding our most vulnerable."
The exemption would apply to those receiving the Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works, and Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities.
"This is an important measure that allows people who rely on ODSP to keep pace with the ever-increasing cost of living," said Community Living Ontario CEO Chris Beesley. "We also welcome the news that the government of Ontario has accepted our recommendation to not reduce ODSP payments for those who will receive the federal Canada Disability Benefit. While there is still much to be done to raise income support to liveable levels in Ontario, these are two essential steps that will put more money in people's pockets."
The Canada Disability Benefit offers up to $200 a month for low-income, working-age Canadians living with disabilities. The Ontario government has already tied ODSP and ACSD rates to inflation. However, it continues to call on the federal government to amend its Income Tax Act so that the benefit reaches as many people as possible.
Ontario has also increased the earnings exemption for those with a disability receiving benefits to $1,000 a month.
