Gas is no longer being detected in Wheatley after emergency crews were called to the local library branch on Canada Day.
A member of the public reported a strong odour in the area of 35 Talbot Street West just before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1 just five days after hydrogen sulfide gas was confirmed in the same spot.
Emergency crews responded promptly and confirmed that it was gas. This time, no evacuations were ordered and a few nearby homes were advised to shelter in place as a precaution.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue (CKFR) says the situation had stabilized by 7 p.m. Tuesday and crews were scaled back for the evening.
By 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, officials said gas was no longer being detected, but emergency crews would remain on the scene overnight to continue monitoring.
CKFR added that public safety remains the top priority, and anyone affected by the incident has spoken directly to a chief officer.
There is no word yet on whether Tuesday's gas detection will affect plans to re-open the Wheatley Library on Thursday.
