Demolition work restarting in downtown Tilbury, third building set to come down

Demolition work will soon start on a third building in downtown Tilbury.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent announced in a press release that the owners of 55 Queen Street North have decided to clear out the property.

A demolition contractor will be on site starting Wednesday, with the actual demolition expected to begin on September 2.

This building was connected to two buildings that started to collapse in 2022. The collapsing structures were in the middle of being demolished when work had to be stopped last year because of structural issues with the neighbouring buildings.

Demolition work on these buildings is expected to happen alongside the work on 55 Queen Street North.

The property owner of the neighbouring buildings originally planned to keep both up, even going as far as to provide a work plan to the municipality to address the structural issues.

The plan for the other building, located at 45 Queen Street North, is to keep it up.

A building permit has been issued by the municipality to address the structural issues with the wall previously connected to the collapsed buildings.
