Construction on an eight-classroom addition to St. Joseph's High School in east Windsor is underway.
The $2.9 construction contract was awarded to Alliance General Contracting of Windsor Inc.
The addition was first announced in May 2024.
"It's almost like waiting with baited breath for the actual ground breaking. We know it's happening, when is it happening? But the other day we had students in a tech design classroom, they were looking out the window and here came the crane," said Principal Laura Beltran.
The school was built in 2006 for up to 1,100 students. The current enrollment is above 1,300.
"Right now I currently have 10 portables on site and so with the eight additional classrooms we can bring more students back into the building, we can reduce the volume of traffic in the hallways, and just give that feeling to students that this is their school community and they're a part of the school," said Beltran.
MPP Andrew Dowie said he is happy to see the addition underway.
"We need to reduce the amount of processes between the time the school is needed to the time of delivery. We've passed a few bills to try and nip away at that but there's more to be done," said Dowie.
Work is expected to be complete by December 2026.
