Essex proposes a 4.92 per cent increase in 2026 draft budget

The Town of Essex has released its draft 2026 budget, calling for a 4.92 per cent increase in the property tax rate.

Budget deliberations are set for December 8 and December 9, so the proposed rate may still come down.

Those budget meetings will be live-streamed on the Town of Essex's YouTube channel starting at 1 p.m. on December 8 and at 12 p.m. on December 9.

This year's budget proposes a spending plan with $80.4-million in total revenues and expenses, including more than $21.5-million for capital projects and initiatives.

"This budget incorporates contractual increases from the current policing contract, along with the phased-in impact of the 2024 negotiated contract," said a release. "The town continues to dedicate monies to the asset management program, with a current 1 per cent levy presented in the 2026 budget, to ensure readiness for asset replacement and that continued service level targets are met."

Some of the key projects named in the budget include replacing Fire Station 3, improvements at the Maidstone Avenue and Talbot Street intersection, and a new hybrid bylaw enforcement patrol vehicle.

"This budget reflects thoughtful, forward-thinking planning that balances the needs of today with the opportunities of tomorrow," said Director of Corporate Services, Kate Rowe. "By investing in infrastructure, innovation, and long-term financial stability, the Town of Essex continues to build a strong foundation for our community."

The budget can be viewed on the Town of Essex Website.
