Ontario to introduce new provincial park classification

Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie's Private Member's Bill to modernize the provincial park system was passed with unanimous consent this week.

Bill 26 introduces two new classes, the Urban Class Parks and Adventure Class Parks, to the system.

"It allows for the assembly of and creation of more provincial parks that are a bit more unorthodox," said Dowie. "By that I mean areas that are closer to cities, areas that may have been altered but are now coming into public ownership and are used for more intensive recreation."

Adventure Class Parks will offer more opportunities for outdoor recreation, like rock climbing or mountain biking, that don't only rely on the natural habitat.

The first Urban Class Park will be Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park, and the first Adventure Class Park will be designated at Charleston Lake Provincial Park.

The bill still needs Royal Assent from Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor.
