Adaptive Phys-Ed program piloted at Holy Names High School

The University of Windsor is working with Holy Names High School to develop an adaptive physical exercise program for students in the life skills program.

The pilot program at the high school pairs students in Leadership with students with special needs to develop a physical exercise program that fits their needs.

"That communication and that relationship that's being built has not only helped the Life Skills students feel safe, but also the Leadership students get that mentorship and that stewardship in the program," said Stacey Ditchfield, teacher at Holy Names High School.

The pilot program at the high school is an extension of the program developed by Chad Sutherland, Director of Operations and Sport Performance at the University of Windsor. The program was originally developed 15 years ago in partnership with Community Living Essex County to encourage people in the community with special needs to become more physically active.

Sutherland said they wanted to bring the program into the community to introduce adaptive physical exercise earlier in these individual's lives.

"I think this adaptive physical exercise program brings something to our community to people who maybe don't have access and is leading them to a more inclusive and healthier lifestyle and that's the goal," said Sutherland.

Students at Holy Names have been participating in the fitness activities for four weeks.

Ditchfield said she could see it being successful in schools throughout the region.

"The research is supporting how important it is, especially, not only with life skills phys-ed classes but phys-ed classes in general, a fitness class, resistance training, all of that, the benefits that you can tie in even with mental health, it absolutely should be in every school," said Ditchfield.
