Windsor police continue to make headway against shoplifting

Windsor police's Retail Theft Unit has reported gaining more of an upper hand against shoplifting in 2025.

In a report released on social media on Tuesday, Windsor police said that reported shoplifting incidents last year were down 29 per cent.

Retail theft cases cleared by charge also declined in 2025, by 24 per cent.

Since the unit was launched in the fall of 2024, the number of Windsor businesses choosing to move forward with charges increased by 84 per cent.

Windsor Police Inspector of Patrol Support Jennifer Crosby said in September 2025 that the unit's mission was to help businesses keep costs down.

"Retail theft has a significant impact on businesses, employees, and the community as a whole," said Crosby at the time. "The work of this unit is ensuring that repeat offenders are identified and held accountable, while also addressing organized groups that exploit our retailers. These results reflect the dedication of our members and the importance of strong partnerships with local businesses."

The unit focuses on shoplifting, organized retail crime, and repeat offenders. It works closely with loss-prevention employees at the city's retailers to enhance theft prevention and surveillance strategies.

Anyone with information on shoplifting or other forms of retail crime should call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, extension 4000. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-8477 (TIPS).
