U of W teams up with U of Ottawa on Francophone learning

The University of Windsor has joined another Ontario school to promote and enrich French-language learning.

A new initiative has been funded by the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT), between U of W, and the University of Ottawa.

The project is titled Supporting the Transferability of French-Language Courses. The purpose is to streamline the process that allows for worry-free credit transfers from online French-language courses taught at the two universities.

Dr. Emmanuelle Richez, a professor at the U of W Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said the project will help remove obstacles for those wanting to continue their coursework across universities while maintaining access to Francophone education.

"This initiative responds to a demonstrated need for additional French-language programming and positions the University of Windsor to better serve a growing population of French speakers and a workforce that increasingly requires bilingual skills," said Richez.

ONCAT is funding 27 projects throughout Ontario's publicly funded colleges, universities, and Indigenous institutions. The funding was announced on Tuesday by Minister Nolan Quinn of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (CURES).

The Universities of Windsor and Ottawa will develop a common model that may eventually be used by postsecondary schools across the province.

"We are grateful for the Government of Ontario’s investment, which will help reduce barriers and create more accessible, learner-centred opportunities in postsecondary education for our students in both official languages," said U of W Interim Provost and Academic Vice-President Dr. Cheryl Collier.
