Work will begin this spring on the Pelee East Shore Distribution System and Water Storage Rehabilitation Project on Pelee Island.
The project is being funded in part by a $700,000 grant from the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.
"The East Shore Distribution System supports about 11 houses and emergency response and it's aging and it's not in a great place. This funding came at exactly the nick of time," said Mayor Kathy Miller.
She indicated with such a small capital budget overall, this project could not have been completed without the province's support.
"The emergent things will happen this spring, into the summer, those things are being planned," said Miller. "But it is a three-year window for us so we're hoping to do it in two phases."
The project will help the municipality maintain a safe supply of drinking water and expand emergency response capacity.
"It means year-round reliability for those people and also our fire department will notice right away that they have more support and more water supply in the case of a fire, which is hugely important," said Miller.
