Five alleged impaired drivers arrested by Windsor police

Windsor police had their hands full over the weekend, with at least five people charged for impaired driving.

The first arrest was on Friday morning at around 9 a.m. Police responded to a man passed out in a vehicle near Central Avenue and Grand Marais East. He had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle after attempting to drive off. Police searched the vehicle and found an unspecified amount of suspected methamphetamine.

The 50-year-old driver is charged with impairment by drug and possession of a Schedule I substance.

About an hour later, police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Tecumseh Road West near California Avenue. The driver showed signs of impairment, including a strong odour of alcohol and slurred speech.

The 31-year-old woman has been charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, and three counts of driving while prohibited.

The next arrest was made at around 4 a.m. on Sunday, when officers responded to an unresponsive person in the area of Riverdale Avenue and Wyandotte Street East. The vehicle was stopped in the road with the engine running. Police awakened the driver, searched the vehicle, and found 21.9 grams of suspected fentanyl and 10.2 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

A 47-year-old man is charged with impaired driving by drug, and two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance.

Next, border agents at the Ambassador Bridge contacted Windsor police at about 1 p.m. Sunday, about a driver who hit a traffic pylon and drove over a median that separated inspection lanes. The driver appeared to be disoriented and had trouble standing on his own.

A 26-year-old man was charged with impaired driving by drug.

Finally, officers were called at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday to a two-vehicle collision at Aylmer Avenue and Wyandotte Street East. They spoke with a female driver and noticed a strong scent of alcohol and signs of impairment.

The 61-year-old woman was charged with impaired driving and driving with excessive blood-alcohol concentration.

The charges against all suspects have yet to be proven in court.

Smell pot in your neighbourhood? About that

Very few municipalities have enacted bylaws to control the smell of marijuana cultivated for personal medical use, and the report to Windsor City Council suggests that might be because it could be susceptible to a court challenge.
