Windsor-Essex Community Housing Corp. opens 19 new units

A new community housing project is ready to welcome 19 new residents.

The Grace on Ouellette Apartments was a $3.3 million partnership between the City of Windsor, the provincial government, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation.

"We're talking about 19 individuals and families who were previously finding it challenging to access affordable housing now can access affordable housing," said Fabio Costante, Chief Executive Officer of the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation. "I always go back to, let's not always go back to the big challenges we have, let's focus on the small things we can do every single day that lead to big change."

There are currently over 7,000 people on the waitlist for affordable housing units in the community.

The project was first announced in 2023. It transformed a two-storey medical building, formerly owned by Hotel-Dieu Grace Health Care, into 19 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Some of the units will be reserved for participants of the government's Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hubs.

"The investment at ‘The Grace on Ouellette Apartments’ at 1106 Ouellette Avenue represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to expand access to safe, affordable housing in Windsor and provide meaningful support to individuals and families across our community. I am proud to see the Government of Ontario support this strong partnership between the City of Windsor, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation — a collaboration that is addressing local housing needs, strengthening community well-being, and helping build a more resilient future for Windsor residents,” said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.

Renovations were completed this year and all but two units are currently filled.
