West Region OPP launch 'Operation Safe Driver'

Drivers across the region can expect to see increased enforcement on OPP-patrolled roads over the next several days.

The Ontario Provincial Police have launched the annual "Operation Safe Driver" campaign, in an effort to curb unsafe driving practices.

The campaign, which runs from July 12-18, is designed to "enhance traffic safety among commercial and non-commercial vehicle drivers," according to a statement from the OPP.

This campaign is led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), and will see OPP officers in the West Region work alongside the Ministry of Transportation to increase enforcement and education efforts during the campaign.

Police will be targeting the lead contributing factors in commercial motor vehicle (CMV) collisions, such as speeding, improper lane changes and following too closely.

According to the OPP, in 2025 in the West Region, officers responded to and investigated 1,411 collisions involving commercial motor vehicles. In those collision, 23 people lost their lives and 208 people were injured.
