Detroit Lions president to retire after 11 seasons

An NFL executive who oversaw the resurrection of the Detroit Lions will move on later this year.

The Lions announced in a statement on Wednesday afternoon that President and CEO Rod Wood will retire after 11 years with the team.

"I want to thank the Ford Family and ultimately Lions fans everywhere for trusting me to lead the Detroit Lions for the last 11 seasons," said Wood in a statement provided by the Lions. "It has been an absolute thrill for me to lead this organization, and I am proud of what we have accomplished over that decade-plus. I am most proud of where I am leaving this organization, in the capable hands of Sheila Hamp, Brad Holmes, and Dan Campbell."

Wood added that he was looking forward to spending more time with his family.

"Rod has been a trusted advisor and passionate leader for our organization and the entire NFL during that time and has prepared our organization for a promising future," said Lions Principal Owner and Chairperson Sheila Ford Hamp. "While Rod will be missed, we are excited to work with Russell Reynolds Associates to find the next dynamic leader of our business."

Russell Reynolds Associates will take charge of the search for a new president and CEO. Wood will stay with the team until one is hired.

Since Wood started with the Lions in 2015, he presided over the hiring of Holmes, the general manager, as well as the hiring of two head coaches and one interim coach, Matt Patricia, Darrell Bevell, and Campbell. Campbell has been with the Lions since 2021.

The Lions have been to the playoffs three times during Wood's tenure, including back-to-back appearances in 2024 and 2025. Detroit ended its playoff futility streak in 2024 and made it to the NFC Championship Game.
